I am truly blessed to be able to give back what was given to me. It's amazing to see the number of lives touched by by taking a quick hour out of your day to give blood. I work in both Yuba City and Chico areas and love being able to share my story around North Valley.

Having been a stay at home mom for the past 13 years, I've recently ventured back into the workplace. There are certainly benefits to both! The blessing of having the ability to stay home and mold the clay which God has given me, has, and continues to be, my greatest achievement. I am really starting to reap the rewards as my children have become older! My oldest is now 13 and a Red Cross certified babysitter. I felt it was the appropriate time to give her more responsibility, and for myself, the opportunity to use the talents God has given me. I am only working 15-20 hours weekly, but it sometimes feels like forever when I'm away; I miss my kids! There are days when I question my decision, but not many! I have watched my children become more responsible, diligent and better problem solvers because I am not available 24/7 to guide them. They have to use the values and tools I've given them over the years to find a solution...and it's working. My feeling is, by working, I am showing my children I trust them, how to be self-sufficient, and rewarding them for their effort. There will always be a debate, people, unfortunately, will always judge others for their choices...but the choice is yours and what's right for your family. Never let others hold you back from following the path chosen for you!

Very well written. The debate is never going to cease. I for one have raised two boys while being employed full time. I now have the chance to stay at home with my two daughters. For me PERSONALLY staying at home is going to have a far better personal impact on them than the experience I had with my two boys.

Thanks for your post on this topic. I am a working mom and very satisfied with my choice. I had been a working professional for 12 years when I had my son 18 months ago and new when he was born I would go back to work. I am very confident that he is safe, loved and learning during his day while in child care. I greatly look forward to our evenings, weekends and holidays and know I am a better mom because of this decision. We as individuls are all cut from differnt cloth and should not be expected to follow one path for raising children. My husband and I do what is best for ourselves, our son and our family as a whole. While this works for us, it may not work for others and that is okay. Be proud of the decision you make and you will be a better person for it.

Sima,

I enjoyed your article. I am a stay at home Mom with 4 kids. My youngest children, two sons, are 2 and 4 and my oldest, two daughters, are 13 and 15. I have been a stay at home Mom for about 5 years. Prior to that, I worked but was able to be home with my daughter during the day. I have my share of friends who stay home and many who have gone back to work. Choosing what works best for you is the only right answer. For me, I have chosen to stay home with my children for several reasons. First, and most importantly, I am a pretty awesome Mom and I want my children to spend their precious and influential time with me, or their loved ones (who are equally as awesome). LOL My family has moved numerous times in the past 5 years for my husband's work and rarely do we know more than a handful of people in any area we have lived. Until recently, we lived in South Orange County, CA and San Diego. I currently live in a suburb of Georgia. Trusting someone with my children (reason #2) is something that I will have to learn to do but at this point, it is more expensive to put them in daycare than to stay home. If I started working right now, I would have to pay about $2k a month for daycare and I would likely have to work random hours to accommodate my husband's hectic schedule. That's reason #3. Lastly, reason #4, being a stay at home Mom has allowed me the opportunity to finish school, and then start again. :)

I do not think Moms that return to work are selfish. I think times are hard and people like to have nice possessions. The job of a Mom is unlike any other. We have conversations all day, everyday, with children. The job never pauses. You asked, "Do you feel judged by moms who make a different choice..." I could care less. My kids are amazing people. Someone who acts as if they are a better person than another doesn't belong in my presence. I've been a grown up for a long time. :)

Thanks,

This is a constant topic of judgement in the world of motherhood. But in my world, I didn't think twice about hanging up my Bachelor degree and career to be home with my baby.
While I do believe everyone has the right to choose their own method of raising their child, I do disagree with some things in this article.
I do not believe that "all children care about is how we are balancing things". All kids *really* notice is how often we are around. They want their mommy. And I couldn't possibly bare the thought that they'd want their daycare provider because that's the person they'd be around a majority of the time.
Also, I was never tempted to remain working to give my child a "better" lifestyle. I do not believe that more money provides a better upbringing or creates a child with strong character, a kinder heart, or better experiences. All I can remember growing up was times spent with my family, playing games, and sharing experiences spent together. Having my mom stay home with ME made the biggest impression on me and the person I've become.
I personally believe that while children are not of school age AND if families can afford to live off one income, moms should choose to stay home with their children. Once they enter school, I'm a huge advocate of getting back into the work force.
While I have a different perspective from this article, I really enjoy this debate and think its important to take time to hear eachother's different views and listen...

Well written, Sima!
